Wikipedia:Files for discussion
Skip to table of contents · Skip to current discussions · Purge this page |
Files for discussion (FfD) is for listing images and other media files which may be unneeded or have either free content or non-free content usage concerns. Files that have been listed here for more than 7 days are eligible for either deletion or removal from pages if either a consensus to do so has been reached or the nominator specifically requests deletion or removal and no objections are raised. To quote the non-free content criteria, "it is the duty of users seeking to include or retain content to provide a valid rationale; those seeking to remove or delete it are not required to show that one cannot be created." For undeletion requests, first contact the administrator who deleted the file. If you are unable to resolve the issue with that administrator, the matter should be brought to deletion review. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
What not to list here[edit]
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Instructions for listing files for discussion Use Twinkle. If you can't, follow these steps to do manually:
State the reasons why the file should be deleted, removed, or altered. Also, state what specific action should be taken, preferably in bold text; this allows discussion participants and closers to better understand the purpose of the nomination. Some examples of nomination statements include:
Examples of what files you may request for discussion, deletion or change here:
These are not the only "valid" reasons to discuss a file. Any properly explained reason can be used. The above list comprises the most common and uncontroversial ones. If you remove a file from an article, list the article from which you removed it so there can be community review of whether the file should be deleted. This is necessary because file pages do not remember the articles on which the file were previously used. If you have general questions about a file and/or its copyright status, then please start a new thread at Media Copyright Questions. |

Instructions for discussion participation[edit]
In responding to the deletion nomination, consider adding your post in the format
* '''View''' - Reasoning ... -- ~~~~
where "Delete", "Keep", "Comment", or something else may replace "View". In posting their reasoning, many editors use abbreviations and cite to the following:
- Wikipedia:NFCC#1 – Free equivalent is/is not available
- Wikipedia:NFCC#8 – Significance
- Wikipedia:Non-free content#Images 2 – Unacceptable image use
Remember that polling is not a substitute for discussion. Wikipedia's primary method of determining consensus is through editing and discussion, not voting. Although editors occasionally use straw polls in an attempt to test for consensus, polls or surveys sometimes impede rather than assist discussion. They should be used with caution, and are no more binding than any other consensus decision.
Also remember that if you believe that an image is potentially useful for other projects and should be moved to Wikimedia Commons, in lieu of responding '''Move to Commons'''
, you can move it there yourself. See Wikipedia:Moving files to the Commons for instructions.
Instructions for closing discussions[edit]
Nominations should be processed for closing after being listed for 7 days following the steps here.
Old discussions[edit]
The following discussions are more than 7 days old and are pending processing by an administrator:
For older nominations, see the archives.
Discussions approaching conclusion[edit]
Discussions with at least 6 full days since nomination. After 7 days, they may be closed.

- For this file and the one above, am I right in thinking that from the non-free content criteria (WP:NFCCP), the one that would be violated here is 3a: "Multiple items of non-free content are not used if one item can convey equivalent significant information"? Or 8: "Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic"?

File:Camila Cabello - C,XOXO.jpg[edit]
- File:Camila Cabello - C,XOXO.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by H9v9n9 (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).
Per WP:NFCC#3a, the main cover File:Camila Cabello - C,XOXO.png conveys equivalent significant information pertaining to C,XOXO. And, per #8 of the same policy, the inclusion of this artwork will not significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would not be detrimental to that understanding. livelikemusic (TALK!) 15:46, 10 May 2024 (UTC)
- Seriously no. The main cover doesn't covery equivalent significant information pertaining to C,XOXO because the latter one was made available for multiple significant retailers like HMV and Target, which means the first part of your opinion doesn't make sense. The inclusion of alternative covers for Guts and Sour proved it's necessary to let it be there, and not to remove it. Moreover, the alternative cover contains the title C,XOXO with the new font this era used everywhere, which is also the brand of this album, which means it's necessary to leave this alternative cover alone and not to remove it. In fact, the inclusion of this artwork will significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding, definitely. H9v9n9 (talk) 16:33, 10 May 2024 (UTC)

- I believe the nomination proposes to relicense the logo as free, not to delete it.
- According to the Commons page on Hungarian copyright rules, only edicts of government are exempt from copyright. We seem to derive that city coats of arms are exempt since they are introduced by explicit regulations. Do we know whether this is also the case for the logo at hand? As a secondary matter, do we have a source for the vectorisation? If not done automatically, the svg rendering may well also bear program copyright. Felix QW (talk) 12:35, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

Doesn't meet WP:NFCC8 Contextual Significance. The image is being used in the article Dolphinarium discotheque massacre. The fair use rationale states "for visual identification of the person in question, at the top of his/her biographical article" but the article is not biographical. The article is not about the file/art in question, the art is merely illustrating the topic of the article, and does not add significant understanding of the article topic. Remove from Andromeda (mythology). Pretty sure this image fails WP:NFCC#8 with its use in Andromeda (mythology)#In film since the subject of the article is not the film. Readers can just go to Clash of the Titans (1981 film), which is linked at Andromeda (mythology)#In film, to see the poster since the poster meets all WP:NFCC in Clash of the Titans (1981 film). Steel1943 (talk) 00:58, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
- KEEP: The Clash of the Titans is directly discussed and reliably cited in the article, where it l makes a visual point vital to the article. Thee point made by the scholar is that the film can be criticised for casting a white actress (pictured) as the (black Aethiopian) Andromeda, This is important to the article, as Andromeda has a long tradition of being shown as white, and the film is the major modern case proving the misrepresentation has continued. Saying folks can look elsewhere misses the point that the film's poster directly and visceral demonstrates the enduring and still-current image, which a footnote that most readers will skip simply fails to achieve. I have extended the non-free usage rationale to this effect. Chiswick Chap (talk) 05:08, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
- Comment: While I agree the rational for that citation, the poster does not really illustrate that point, so I don't know if it is valid here. It does predominantly feature two actors who appear to be white, but it's a stylized image and doesn't represent the cast at large. Andrzejbanas (talk) 12:06, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for agreeing that the rationale is correct. I'll note that the article is not concerned with the cast at large. The article is about Andromeda, who is played by Judi Bowker, the white woman in the poster. The image is ideally suited to the scholar's point made in the article. Chiswick Chap (talk) 12:19, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

This image of an album cover is being used on an article about the contest itself and only has 2 sentences of text plus a table about the album. As such, fails WP:NFCC#8 as it doesn't significantly enhance a reader's understanding of the contest. Joseph2302 (talk) 11:51, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

- Not 100% sure about this one. Isn't Germany have some very strict copyright laws that could cause issues? Otherwise, fine with the Commons version, but I know things like this can be complicated. Andrzejbanas (talk) 17:55, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
- Keep I believe Andrzejbanas is correct. The signature looks to me like Josef Fenneker (1895–1956), whose works will not be public domain in Germany until 2027. hinnk (talk) 18:52, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

File:Follow You Imagine Dragons cover.jpg[edit]
- File:Follow You Imagine Dragons cover.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Rockboy1009 (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).
This cover was recently uploaded to replace the preferred North American cover, File:Imagine Dragons - Follow You Cutthroat.png, for an American band in the article, Follow You (Imagine Dragons song). Per discogs, [4], this cover is not even shown and looks like part of the European cover. This cover is from Amoeba Music, but doing a Google search I can find no other versions like this one. The North American cover is from the Apple store and also used in Soundcloud, [5]. The uploader stated it "No reason to have the double single cover when a separate song single cover exists.", but the double cover is the original cover and this one might be fan art. Aspects (talk) 22:18, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
- The cover I uploaded clearly comes up when I search for it on Google [https://imgur.com/a/V1lqtNv]. It is the original cover for the individual song, not the cover of the double single. Also, it is not fanart or unofficial because it is used in the official lyric video for the song [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DoI5WTjd3w]. Rockboy1009 (talk) 22:53, 14 May 2024 (UTC)

This cover was recently uploaded to replace the preferred North American cover, File:Imagine Dragons - Follow You Cutthroat.png, for an American band in the newly created article, Cutthroat (song). First off, this article might fail WP:NMUSIC and being a released as a B-side to Follow You (Imagine Dragons song), the article might be better served if merged to that song. Per discogs, [6], this cover is not even shown and looks like part of the European cover. This cover says it is from Soundcloud, but doing a Google search I can find no other versions like this one. The North American cover is from the Apple store and is the actual cover used on Soundcloud, [7]. The uploader stated it "No reason to have the double single cover when a separate song single cover exists.", but the double cover is the original cover and this one might be fan art. Nine seconds longer than what MOS:SAMPLE intends for a 217-second song, but that's not the main issue. Indeed, no proof that the portion heard in the sample, especially part of first verse, contextually signifies the whole song lasting 217 seconds. Sure, it identifies the song, but I can't help wonder whether the song can be understood without this sample and whether deleting the sample would detriment such understanding. Furthermore, its roles are similar to that of a cover art (in terms of branding and marketing) and those of free text (that drive readers into seeking and listening the full recording). The file is the logo of Kwong Wah Daily, which is used in the article as a visual illustration. However, we already have an image of the newspaper's old version on Commons. If one may argue the Commons version isn't clear enough (so we can't ascertain whether it was in public domain), NUS also holds a collection of the newspaper at 1927-1928 and 1930, in which they are already in Malaysian public domain after1980 (and consequently in US public domain too).
With all the free resources, the file is therefore violating WP:NFCC#1, and should be deleted. 廣九直通車 (talk) 08:37, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

Orphaned file with no provenance. If from after 1928, it will in all likelihood still be copyrighted in the US due to the URAA restorations. As we know nothing about its authorship, it may well even still be copyrighted in Turkey today if the photographer died after 1953. Felix QW (talk) 17:00, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

File:Joan Osborne - One Of Us.ogg[edit]
- File:Joan Osborne - One Of Us.ogg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Epbr123 (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).
De-PROD rationale was this: the chorus is intrinsic to the meaning of the song, like the guitar solo in Free Bird. It's more important than a textual description
. However, the sample of "Free Bird" was deleted (FFD discussion). I'm still unconvinced that One of Us (Joan Osborne song) would be still inadequately understood without a sample like this, and I'm still unconvinced that the sample and free text provide info different and uneqivalent from each other (or maybe I was confusing what I said with WP:FREER).
Sure, the chorus and partial second verse heard in the sample help readers identify the part of the song, but I still don't know why other editors think it contextually signifies the whole song other than (supposed?) mistrusting the adequacy of free content. On the contrary, reading the article, the free text adequately summarizes what the song is generally about and the popularity and reception of the song. George Ho (talk) 22:29, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

Fails WP:NFCC#3- minimal number of non free images- as well as WP:NFCC#8, as it doesn't significantly enhance the article any more than the actual college logo itself. Joseph2302 (talk) 06:39, 17 May 2024 (UTC)
